Behind the Skene
Newtown, Geelong
Residential
Behind the Skene involved the careful upgrade and modernisation of an original heritage home situated on a large, sloping site in Newtown, Geelong. A generous single‑storey contemporary rear extension was added, along with a detached garage located along the rear boundary, allowing the primary dwelling to remain visually dominant within the streetscape.
The new extension is deliberately concealed from street view, preserving the heritage character of the original home. Internally, the living spaces are re‑oriented toward the private rear garden, strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor areas. A raked ceiling within the main living area creates a sense of volume and openness, while high‑level northern glazing allows winter sunlight to penetrate deeply into the space.
Carefully designed eaves provide passive shading in summer, ensuring year‑round comfort and environmental performance. The project achieves a balanced integration of old and new, enhancing amenity while respecting the home’s heritage context.
