Chilwell Library

Newtown

Community, Education, In Studio

The Chilwell Library redevelopment is a community‑focused architectural project that transforms the existing library into a larger, brighter and more flexible civic space while retaining its familiar neighbourhood character. Located within Sladen Park, the design strengthens the library’s connection to the surrounding landscape, reinforcing its role as a welcoming public place embedded within the park setting.

The architecture prioritises openness, accessibility and adaptability. Internal spaces are reorganised to support a diverse range of activities including reading, learning, informal gathering and community events. Clear spatial zoning and flexible layouts allow the library to respond to changing patterns of use while remaining intuitive and inclusive for all visitors.

The building form balances contemporary expression with contextual sensitivity. Carefully considered materials, natural light and visual connections to the park enhance comfort and legibility, while durable, low‑maintenance construction ensures long‑term resilience. Overall, the project delivers a modern, inclusive and inviting library that supports community connection and lifelong learning.
