U-House
Fitzroy
Residential
With its carefully restored Edwardian cottage and a restrained, industrial‑inspired addition, the house responds sensitively to the eclectic mix of heritage homes and working sheds that characterise Fitzroy, Melbourne. The design balances respect for the original dwelling with a contemporary architectural language that is clearly legible yet complementary.
A new two‑storey extension accommodates the main living spaces, three bedrooms, and a study, while the existing cottage is retained as a private master suite. The brief requirement for a functional 24‑hour workspace led to the inclusion of a small contemporary studio, discreetly linked to the house. Together, the studio and extension form a ‘U’‑shaped plan that consolidates outdoor space to the north.
This configuration creates a private, north‑facing garden that maximises solar access, enhances internal amenity, and establishes strong visual connections throughout the home, supporting both domestic life and work‑from‑home flexibility.
